Hannover - A shocking case has emerged, raising serious concerns within political and judicial circles. For the first time, it is alleged that an international drug cartel succeeded in recruiting a prosecutor, who was actively investigating them, as an informant. The trial against the allegedly bribed prosecutor commenced on Wednesday morning.
Security measures were heightened for this high-profile case, with the courthouse entrance secured by barriers and visitors undergoing thorough searches. Among the attendees were several lawyers, judges, and prosecutors keenly observing the proceedings.
Yashar G., a 39-year-old prosecutor, was brought into the courtroom in handcuffs by court officials. Prior to his arrest in October 2024, he had been suspended from duty and was working in the drug offenses department. Known for his reliability, the German-Iranian prosecutor had been leading investigations against what is said to be the largest cocaine syndicate in Germany, while simultaneously working for the very crime organization he was supposed to dismantle.
His co-defendant, Amir M., 41, is accused of acting as a messenger for the drug lord, allegedly delivering bribes to the prosecutor. M., who runs a boxing gym in Hannover, is said to have been friends with Yashar G.
The charges against the prosecutor include bribery in office, betrayal of official secrets, and obstruction of justice, totaling 14 separate offenses. According to the indictment, he was purportedly referred to as a mole by the cartel in encrypted messaging apps "EncroChat" and "SkyECC."
The indictment claims that the prosecutor and top members of the drug organization exchanged messages and bribes through intermediaries in a highly secretive manner. Konstantinos S., the alleged leader of the cocaine cartel currently residing in Dubai, is said to have engaged the prosecutor as a mole, offering substantial payments for his cooperation.
Reportedly, Yashar G. received a monthly fixed bribe of 5,000 euros, along with additional bonus payments for particularly valuable information, accumulating to approximately 65,000 euros over time. Between June 2020 and March 2021, he allegedly provided the cartel with critical information regarding police surveillance, undercover agents, raids, and impending arrests, allowing key figures like Konstantinos S. to flee abroad in time.
As the investigation unfolded, authorities became aware of a potential leak within the agency. In early 2021, police, after analyzing gang communications and informants' tips, began to piece together evidence that led them to the prosecutor. However, investigators struggled to uncover a clear motive for the alleged greed that drove his actions.
The defense team for Yashar G. firmly denies the allegations, asserting that the prosecutor did not work for the cocaine cartel. Timo Rahn, one of his three defense attorneys, argued that the case is under immense media and political pressure, suggesting that Yashar G. is being made an example of, which he claims is unjust.
Yashar G. is expected to provide a statement in court on May 12 as the trial continues.
