Grand Memorial Service for Pope Francis Concludes with Procession Through Rome

Sat 26th Apr, 2025

In a poignant farewell, Pope Francis is honored with a grand memorial service in Rome, attended by numerous dignitaries and an immense crowd. The ceremony, held under strict security measures, is set to commence at 10:00 AM local time, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors to St. Peter's Square and the adjoining streets. The Pope passed away at the age of 88 on Easter Monday.

Following the memorial service, the Pope's casket will be transported through the streets of Rome, concluding at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where he will be laid to rest in a private ceremony. This will mark a shift in focus towards the upcoming conclave tasked with electing his successor.

Among the attendees is U.S. President Donald Trump, who has arrived in Rome for the first international trip of his second term. He and his wife, Melania, landed at Fiumicino Airport on Friday evening and are currently residing at the U.S. ambassador's residence. Parts of the city have been cordoned off due to the influx of state guests, with heightened security in effect.

Despite the significant attendance, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated he may not attend the memorial due to a recent wave of Russian military attacks in Ukraine, which resulted in multiple casualties.

The gathering is expected to host over 160 delegations from around the world, including key European leaders such as Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron.

The Pope's casket was closed in a private ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica, with a white silk cloth laid over his face. In accordance with Catholic tradition, coins from his pontificate and a biographical account highlighting his dedication to humanity were placed inside the casket.

As of Friday evening, approximately 250,000 mourners had paid their respects to Pope Francis, with many standing in line for hours to enter the Basilica. The memorial service is expected to draw an even larger crowd, as the Pope had requested to be buried in Santa Maria Maggiore, his favorite church, rather than in St. Peter's Basilica.

The procession from St. Peter's Basilica to Santa Maria Maggiore will pass iconic landmarks, including the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Following the public memorial service and procession, the burial will take place in a private setting, attended by a select group of cardinals, family members, and close associates, along with a few homeless individuals as per the Pope's wishes, reflecting his commitment to the marginalized.
