A tragic incident unfolded in the pedestrian zone of Oldenburg early on Sunday morning when a 21-year-old man was fatally injured by police gunfire. The events leading to the shooting began when the individual reportedly sprayed irritant gas in front of a nightclub, resulting in minor injuries to several bystanders. As police arrived at the scene, the suspect allegedly confronted them while continuing to deploy the gas.
According to the Delmenhorst police, the confrontation escalated when the man began to approach the officers in a threatening manner. One officer, a 27-year-old male, discharged his service weapon multiple times, striking the suspect, who subsequently succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.
In accordance with standard procedure, an investigation has been initiated against the officer under suspicion of manslaughter. This is a common practice in such cases to assess whether the use of lethal force was justified and proportional to the threat posed. Reports indicate that the officer also sustained injuries from the irritant gas during the altercation.
The investigation is being overseen by the Oldenburg public prosecutor's office, with a separate police unit from Delmenhorst conducting the inquiry to maintain impartiality. Initial reports suggest that the exact number of shots fired is still under review, as investigators continue to gather evidence, including testimonies from witnesses.
Prior to the police intervention, the 21-year-old had reportedly been denied entry to the nightclub, prompting him to unleash the irritant gas towards security personnel. At least four individuals suffered minor injuries as a result of the gas attack. The suspect fled the scene, but several patrons pursued him until he allegedly brandished a knife, leading them to discontinue the chase.
When confronted by police officers in a nearby street, the man fled again but was intercepted by another police unit. In a final confrontation, he directed irritant gas at the officers, which prompted the officer to use his firearm.
The body of the deceased will undergo an autopsy by forensic specialists, and it is expected that further investigation results will be made available following the Easter holiday.
