Dresden - The Polish government has announced that it will begin enforcing border controls along its western frontier with Germany starting Monday. This decision comes as recent statistics indicate that Germany's own border enforcement measures are having a significant impact on the number of illegal crossings.
According to officials in Warsaw, the new measures are a direct response to the increased border controls and deportations implemented by Germany since April. These actions have generated considerable political tension in Poland, with the right-wing opposition party, Law and Justice (PiS), criticizing Prime Minister Donald Tusk for what they perceive as inaction. PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski has expressed concerns about the rising chaos and lawlessness at the border, claiming that Germany routinely sends illegal migrants back into Poland.
Data released by Germany's Federal Ministry of the Interior shows a notable decline in the number of illegal entries from Poland following the introduction of stricter border controls. In April 2025, the Federal Police recorded 810 unauthorized entries, a sharp decrease from 2,159 cases in the same month the previous year. Additionally, March 2025 saw 658 cases, whereas in March 2024, the figure was more than double at 1,646.
The statistics were provided in response to an inquiry from Clara Bünger, a member of the Left party in Saxony. From January 2024 to April 2025, a total of 18,904 individuals attempted to enter Germany illegally, predominantly through the states of Brandenburg and Saxony. The Frankfurt/Oder border crossing recorded the highest number of cases at 6,239, followed by Görlitz with 3,711, along with additional cases in Ebersbach and Dresden.
During the same period, the majority of those attempting to cross the border were sent back, with 11,389 individuals being turned away. Among these, the largest groups were Ukrainians (5,700), Afghans (600), and 500 Syrians. The lack of biometric data in their documents has been cited as a primary reason for the rejection of many Ukrainian migrants.
Since the reintroduction of stationary border controls in September 2024, the financial burden has been significant, amounting to approximately EUR50.9 million. Nearly half of this figure is attributed to overtime payments for border police, as well as costs associated with allowances, meals, and the establishment of control points.
The current Federal Minister of the Interior, Alexander Dobrindt, intensified border controls following the Solingen terrorist attack that resulted in three fatalities, with the latest measures being implemented on May 7, 2025. While some politicians, like Bünger, criticize the actions as merely symbolic, Dobrindt has received support from his counterpart in Saxony, Armin Schuster, who described the controls as a necessary and overdue initiative.
