Mon 3rd Feb, 2025

A tragic incident unfolded in Philadelphia as a small aircraft, designated for medical transport, crashed shortly after takeoff. The flight was intended to return a seriously ill girl and her mother to Mexico, but they never reached their destination. The victims have been identified as twelve-year-old Valentina Guzman Murillo and her 31-year-old mother, Lizeth Murillo Osuna, both hailing from Ensenada, Mexico.

Valentina had been undergoing extensive treatment for a severe spinal condition (myelomeningocele) at a children's hospital in Philadelphia. Just a day before the ill-fated flight, she was discharged and set to reunite with her family in Mexico. Friends of the family expressed their shock at the tragic loss, noting Valentina's courageous battle against her debilitating condition.

According to family friends, Valentina had shown remarkable resilience throughout her treatment, surpassing medical expectations despite her challenging condition. Her mother worked tirelessly to provide her daughter with the best possible care, even amid significant financial hurdles. Reports indicate that the aircraft, a Learjet 55 operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, took off at 6:06 PM local time but tragically exploded just 30 seconds later, reaching an altitude of only 500 meters over the city.

The crash resulted in the loss of all onboard, including crew members and medical personnel. Additionally, a bystander on the ground was killed by falling debris, and at least 22 others suffered injuries, with several in critical condition. Emergency services have been deployed, and investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident.

Initial reports suggest that a possible gas leak from onboard oxygen tanks, used for the girl's medical needs, may have played a role in the crash. The local government in Ensenada has confirmed the deaths of Valentina and her mother, pledging psychological support for grieving family and friends as they navigate this devastating loss.

The mayor of Ensenada, Claudia Agatón Muñiz, announced that the city administration would ensure that the families receive timely assistance in this time of need. The investigation into the crash continues, focusing on the safety protocols of medical transport flights and the possible mechanical failures that could have contributed to this catastrophe.
