An incident involving a collapsed overhead power line on Friday resulted in significant disruption to long-distance rail services between Hamburg and Munich, leaving 460 passengers stranded for several hours aboard an ICE train near Bardowick, Lower Saxony.
According to railway officials, the train was forced to make an emergency stop approximately 500 meters northwest of Bardowick station when the overhead line became dislodged and fell onto the train's roof. The train, identified as ICE 589, was immobilized on the track in warm weather conditions, with outside temperatures reaching approximately 23 degrees Celsius. As a result, the interior of the stationary train became uncomfortably hot, prompting medical personnel to attend to five passengers who experienced circulatory problems.
Upon detection of the fallen power line, the train driver immediately initiated an emergency braking procedure to prevent further risk to passengers and crew. The damaged line, which carries a voltage of about 15,000 volts, posed a significant electrical hazard. Emergency teams, including a railway incident manager and local fire services, were dispatched to secure the area and safely ground the overhead wire before allowing any evacuation procedures.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the precise cause of the overhead line failure. The Federal Police are involved in examining the incident and assessing whether external factors contributed to the damage.
Passengers on the immobilized train were eventually evacuated via a replacement train, which was brought alongside to facilitate a safe transfer. The incident led to substantial delays and operational disruptions on the major Hamburg-Berlin rail corridor. Long-distance trains were rerouted through Hanover, resulting in extended journey times. Regional services, including the RE3 and RB31 operated by Metronom, also experienced significant delays and partial cancellations along the Hamburg-Lüneburg-Uelzen route.
To mitigate the impact on affected travelers, bus replacement services were arranged for sections of the disrupted routes. Travelers were advised to consult current timetables and service updates prior to departure to stay informed about altered departure and arrival times.
Further compounding travel difficulties in the region, a malfunctioning track switch was reported in Winsen, Lower Saxony. This additional technical issue led to trains being terminated at Winsen, with substitute bus transport provided for onward journeys. The rail operator indicated that these combined incidents resulted in longer delays and increased inconvenience for passengers throughout the day.
Railway authorities emphasized that passenger safety remained the highest priority during the incident response. The successful grounding of the overhead line and the coordinated evacuation ensured that no serious injuries occurred.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of rail infrastructure to technical faults and the importance of swift emergency protocols. Ongoing investigations are expected to provide further details on the origin of the overhead line failure and measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
