As the Carnival season kicks off in North Rhine-Westphalia, the state's Interior Minister has urged residents to embrace the festivities despite heightened security concerns linked to potential terror threats. The celebrations are set to commence on Weiberfastnacht, traditionally marked by vibrant parades and costumed revelers.
The Interior Minister emphasized the importance of not allowing fear to overshadow the spirit of Carnival. He stated that the enjoyment of life and cultural traditions should not be compromised by threats from extremist groups. The minister encouraged everyone to participate in the celebrations, reinforcing that the police presence would be significant during this period.
Approximately 9,900 police officers will be deployed on Weiberfastnacht, with numbers increasing to around 12,000 on Rosenmontag, the highlight of the Carnival festivities. The Interior Minister acknowledged the rigorous preparations made by law enforcement agencies to ensure public safety, noting that the police are well-equipped to manage the challenges posed by the current threat landscape.
While the police have prepared intensively, the minister also recognized the inherent limitations of law enforcement, stating that officers cannot be everywhere at once. However, he reiterated the importance of community engagement in maintaining a festive atmosphere, urging citizens to take part in the celebrations regardless of the potential risks.
The Carnival season is steeped in tradition, with many towns and cities across North Rhine-Westphalia poised to welcome crowds. In cities like Cologne and Düsseldorf, events will include the symbolic takeover of municipalities by women, a long-standing custom that highlights the festive spirit of the days leading up to Lent.
Weather forecasts suggest that participants may have to contend with rainy conditions and chilly temperatures, but this is unlikely to dampen the enthusiasm of Carnival-goers. As the celebrations unfold, the focus remains on enjoying the rich cultural heritage of the region while prioritizing safety and vigilance.
