Pro-European Nicusor Dan Secures Presidential Victory in Romania

Mon 19th May, 2025

In a significant electoral outcome, Nicusor Dan, a pro-European politician, has emerged victorious in the Romanian presidential election, bringing relief to pro-European factions within the country and the European Union. His opponent, the far-right candidate George Simion, aimed to appoint a Kremlin-friendly figure as Prime Minister but ultimately conceded defeat.

With nearly all votes counted, Dan garnered approximately 54% of the total votes, while Simion received about 46%. After a prolonged period of reluctance, Simion acknowledged his loss late in the evening.

Celebrating in front of a large crowd at Bucharest's city hall, Dan expressed gratitude, stating that this victory was for the people. The crowd responded with chants emphasizing Romania's independence from Russian influence, a direct reference to Simion's proposition of appointing Calin Georgescu, a known Kremlin ally, to the premiership.

Dan, who currently serves as the Mayor of Bucharest, cautioned that his administration would face challenging times ahead due to the country's significant budget deficit and the complexities of potential coalition-building in a parliament where right-wing parties hold substantial power.

He called upon all pro-European parties to collaborate, recognizing the challenges of governing in a political landscape where three far-right parties control over a third of parliamentary seats.

Simion, despite eventually conceding, had initially declared himself the victor during the vote count, claiming to represent the will of the Romanian people. Even as he faced defeat, he reiterated his intention to nominate Georgescu as Prime Minister, despite the latter's disqualification following allegations of improper campaign conduct in a previous election.

The reactions to Dan's victory have been overwhelmingly positive across Europe. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated him on what he termed a 'historic victory,' acknowledging Romania's support for Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia. Zelensky emphasized the respect for Romania and its people's contributions during Ukraine's most challenging times.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, praised the Romanian electorate for choosing a path toward an open and prosperous Romania within a strong Europe. French President Emmanuel Macron also extended his congratulations, highlighting the Romanian commitment to democratic principles despite numerous election-related challenges.

Additionally, Maia Sandu, the President of Moldova, expressed her support for Dan, noting the importance of solidarity among nations facing similar threats. Many Moldovans hold dual citizenship with Romania, and Dan received overwhelming support from Moldovan voters residing in Romania.

As Dan prepares to take office, he faces the dual challenges of addressing economic imbalances and fostering unity within a fragmented political landscape. His administration will likely focus on stabilizing the economy and reinforcing Romania's position within the European framework, all while countering the influence of far-right factions that threaten pro-European governance.
