New Corruption Allegations Rock EU Parliament: Arrests and Raids

Thu 13th Mar, 2025

Brussels is facing a potential new scandal as Belgian authorities have launched an investigation into allegations of corruption within the European Parliament. This follows revelations of suspected bribery involving EU lawmakers by interests linked to the Gulf state of Qatar.

In a significant operation, approximately 100 police officers executed 21 search warrants across Belgium and Portugal. This action was part of an inquiry into allegations of active bribery and document forgery. Several individuals have been temporarily detained and are currently undergoing questioning. The suspected aim of the alleged bribery is to sway political decisions in favor of certain business interests.

While the prosecution has not disclosed the names of potential instigators, various Belgian media outlets have speculated that the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei may be connected to these influence-peddling efforts. The role of Chinese technology in Western telecommunications has been a subject of intense debate, with critics expressing concerns that Huawei could provide the Chinese government with access to sensitive mobile networks.

A spokesperson for the European Parliament stated that the institution is fully cooperating with the authorities upon their request. Reports from the German Press Agency indicate that there have been no searches conducted within the Parliament itself. Additionally, information regarding whether any current or former lawmakers are implicated in the investigation remains undisclosed, and there are no indications of any parliamentary members having been arrested.

The prosecution revealed that the alleged corruption has been systematically and discreetly conducted since 2021, often disguised as commercial lobbying activities. This has included questionable payments for political statements and inappropriate gifts, such as regular invitations to sporting events or coverage of dining and travel expenses.

Moreover, there are indications that funds may have been funneled to intermediaries through disguised conference expense payments. The authorities are also investigating possible money laundering activities. As part of the ongoing investigation, several documents and items have been seized and are under analysis.

The emergence of these corruption allegations poses a serious challenge to the integrity of the European Parliament, which has previously faced scrutiny over similar issues. As investigations continue, the implications for EU governance and public trust in its institutions could be significant.
