Neuhardenberg Airport Explores Expansion for Larger Aircraft

Thu 4th Sep, 2025

The Neuhardenberg Airport, a small airfield located in the Märkisch-Oderland district of Brandenburg, is currently evaluating options to accommodate larger aircraft. The local government, including Brandenburg's Minister of Transport, Detlef Tabbert, has expressed support for this initiative, recognizing the potential benefits it could bring to the region.

For several years, Neuhardenberg Airport has been seeking permission to operate under instrument flight rules, which would allow flights in various weather conditions. Currently, the airport can only facilitate visual flight operations, limiting the types of aircraft that can land there. The introduction of instrument flight procedures would significantly enhance operational capabilities, enabling larger planes to utilize the airport.

Tabbert emphasized that the expansion could lead to various development opportunities, including the establishment of maintenance facilities for commercial aviation, which would contribute to the local economy. He noted that the idea proposed by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of East Brandenburg, suggesting that Neuhardenberg could serve as an alternative for delayed flights at Berlin's BER Airport, is also under consideration.

In 2023, the Brandenburg government identified Neuhardenberg as a candidate for instrument flight rule operations during a federal survey. Currently, the approval process for larger aircraft operations and the related instrument flight procedures is ongoing under the oversight of the Joint Upper Aviation Authority of Berlin-Brandenburg, though a decision has yet to be reached.

On a recent visit to the airport, Berlin's Governing Mayor, Kai Wegner, discussed regional economic and transportation issues, highlighting the airport's strategic importance. Neuhardenberg Airport, originally established as a military airfield in secrecy in 1934, holds a 24-hour operating license and is located approximately 80 kilometers from central Berlin and nearly 90 kilometers from BER.

While the BER Airport imposes a nighttime flight ban, Neuhardenberg does not have such restrictions, which may enhance its appeal for airlines. A representative from the BER Airport stated that they welcome efforts to optimize flight operations in the capital region, acknowledging the challenges that arise from the current limitations at BER, including flight rerouting for delays.
