A devastating earthquake has struck Myanmar, particularly affecting the city of Sagaing, where the aftermath is marked by a horrific humanitarian crisis. The area is currently overwhelmed by the stench of decaying bodies, as the local authorities report a severe shortage of body bags to manage the casualties.
In the wake of the earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 7.7, the situation remains dire. Aid is being mobilized from various parts of the world, yet there are growing concerns regarding the military junta's potential misappropriation of these funds and resources. Since seizing power in early 2021, the junta has consistently demonstrated a callous disregard for the welfare of its citizens, conducting airstrikes against opposition groups even amidst this natural disaster.
Reports suggest that the junta has historically obstructed or redirected foreign aid intended for humanitarian assistance. As stated by various news outlets, there is skepticism about whether the military will utilize the incoming aid effectively for disaster relief.
Human Rights Watch has urged for immediate and unrestricted humanitarian access for the earthquake survivors, calling for the lifting of any restrictions that hinder aid delivery. However, despite the catastrophic circumstances, the military continues its aggressive operations, further complicating the humanitarian response, including limiting internet access in severely affected areas.
According to the junta, the death toll has exceeded 2,000, with around 3,900 individuals reported injured and 270 still missing. However, experts believe that the actual figures could be significantly higher due to the poor state of infrastructure and communication exacerbated by the ongoing political turmoil.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that the casualty figures are alarmingly high and are expected to rise. Millions of people are estimated to be living in regions affected by the earthquake and its aftershocks.
Meanwhile, in neighboring Thailand, search operations are continuing at the site of a collapsed high-rise construction project, where additional fatalities have been discovered. The earthquake's impact was felt in Bangkok, causing damage to numerous structures that require thorough inspections. As rescue efforts progress, the total death count in Thailand has surpassed 20, with over 70 individuals still unaccounted for.
The humanitarian situation remains critical, with rescue teams employing various technologies and methods in their search efforts. Unfortunately, hopes of finding survivors are diminishing as time passes.
