Innovative modifications have transformed Apple's Mac mini M4 into a more portable device, allowing users to take the compact desktop computer on the go. However, the practicality of these modifications raises questions about their everyday usability.

Two tech enthusiasts have made strides in enhancing the Mac mini M4, renowned for its impressive performance and compact design. The first project, led by a hardware hacker from Morocco, demonstrates how the Mac mini can be powered using USB-C technology. This modification involves internal adjustments where one of the USB-C ports is repurposed to function as a Power Delivery port, compatible with a 12-volt power bank. The original power supply can still be utilized, with the option to switch between power sources as needed. However, details on the power bank's endurance during heavy usage remain unspecified, particularly given that the Mac mini M4 consumes up to 65 watts, while the M4 Pro variant can draw up to 140 watts, excluding any connected peripherals.

An alternative solution exists for those unwilling to engage in hardware modifications, which involves utilizing a power bank capable of delivering 110 volts through a traditional outlet. While these options are viable, they are often heavier and bulkier, which may counteract the benefits of portability.

Another inventive project comes from a creator known for 3D printing, who has designed a custom case complete with a keyboard and a touchscreen monitor for the Mac mini M4. This setup is foldable, enhancing its portability and making it suitable for environments like cafes or offices. The design includes a dedicated slot for the Mac mini, secured with a strap to keep it in place. However, it is worth noting that this creation currently lacks an integrated trackpad, requiring users to bring an external mouse.

These projects illustrate the possibilities of enhancing the Mac mini M4's mobility, but they also highlight the challenges of achieving true portability without compromising functionality and convenience. As technology evolves, the demand for versatile computing solutions continues to grow, prompting innovative approaches from tech enthusiasts around the world.
