Microsoft Addresses Update Error 0x80070643 in Windows 10 and Server 2022

Tue 22nd Apr, 2025

Microsoft has resolved an issue that caused error code 0x80070643 to appear during the update process for Windows 10 and Server 2022. This problem had been reported by numerous users following the April update.

The company acknowledged last week that installations of the April updates for Windows 10 and Server 2022 were triggering this error message, which has previously caused frustration among users. Fortunately, Microsoft has managed to rectify the situation.

According to Microsoft's release notes, users running Windows 10 versions 22H2 and 21H2, as well as Server 2022, can expect improvements. The company stated that if users install update KB5057588 after April 21, 2025, at 2 AM Pacific Time (which corresponds to 11 PM Central European Summer Time), the erroneous installation failure message will no longer be displayed. For those who have already installed the update, it will not be offered again. Users can check the status of this update using the command Dism /Online /Get-Packages.

The erroneous installation message had been related to update KB5057588 for the Windows Recovery Environment in the affected Windows versions. Microsoft clarified that following the installation of this update, users might see an error message stating 0x80070643 - ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE on their Windows Update settings page. However, this message was misleading and did not impact the functionality of the updates or the devices themselves.

Furthermore, Microsoft explained that Windows Update may continue to indicate the update as failed until the next routine scan occurs, at which point the update will no longer be presented, and the error message will be automatically removed.

While this particular issue has been quickly addressed, it is worth noting that previous failures related to BitLocker encryption updates in the Windows Recovery Environment had resulted in a prolonged lack of resolution. Ultimately, Microsoft chose to abandon efforts for an automated solution for that particular problem.
