A tragic incident unfolded at a railway station in New Delhi, where a mass panic led to the deaths of at least 18 individuals, including children. This disaster occurred amid the high influx of pilgrims traveling to the Maha Kumbh Mela, the world's largest religious festival, taking place in Prayagraj, approximately 670 kilometers away.
The incident transpired on Saturday evening when a significant number of travelers attempted to shift from one platform to another. According to Himanshu Upadhyay, a spokesperson for the Northern Railway Zone, the station was overwhelmed due to the massive crowd. In an effort to manage the situation, several special trains were arranged. However, chaos ensued as many passengers attempted to switch platforms, leading to surges of people on stairways.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the overcrowded conditions contributed to numerous individuals fainting in the crowd. Reports indicate that five minors were among the deceased. The Indian Railway's investigation team has been tasked to determine the precise causes of the incident, while initial reports suggest that train delays may have exacerbated the chaotic environment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the families of the victims and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. He took to social media to share his thoughts on the tragedy.
This incident marks a grim reminder of the dangers associated with large gatherings in India, especially during significant religious events. Just weeks prior, a similar mass panic at the Kumbh Mela festival in Prayagraj resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people, highlighting ongoing safety concerns at such large-scale events.
The Kumbh Mela, a six-week-long festival, attracts millions of pilgrims who gather for ritualistic baths at the confluence of sacred rivers. Unfortunately, such large-scale events have a history of resulting in tragic incidents due to inadequate crowd control and safety measures.
As investigations proceed, authorities are urged to enhance crowd management strategies to prevent such heart-wrenching occurrences in the future.
