The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has commenced a significant reduction in its workforce, resulting in the termination of approximately 10,000 employees. This decision, part of a broader restructuring initiative led by the Trump administration, aims to streamline operations within the department.
On Tuesday, many employees received notifications of their dismissal via email, while others discovered their terminations upon arriving at work, finding their access to facilities revoked. This round of layoffs is expected to save the government around $1.8 billion annually.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced the layoffs, emphasizing that they are a component of a comprehensive reform strategy intended to enhance the department's efficiency. The cuts will reduce the full-time staff from 82,000 to 62,000, following previous reductions from voluntary resignations and early retirements since Trump took office.
The layoffs encompass various divisions within HHS, including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Reports indicate that several senior officials have been offered reassignment to remote locations, such as Alaska and Oklahoma.
According to Kennedy, the ongoing reforms focus on prioritizing chronic disease prevention. He acknowledged the challenges faced during this transition period for the entire department. The restructuring plan involves consolidating the existing 28 divisions of HHS into 15, which includes the establishment of a new entity called the Administration for a Healthy America (AHA).
This drastic workforce reduction aligns with President Trump's broader agenda of minimizing the federal bureaucracy, a strategy supported by his advisor, Elon Musk. Thousands of federal employees have previously been laid off or have opted for early retirement as part of this initiative. However, the move has sparked numerous lawsuits against the administration.
