Marzahn's Cable Car Ride Requires Separate Ticket Purchase

Thu 2nd Oct, 2025

The scenic cable car ride in Marzahn, Berlin, continues to require visitors to purchase a separate ticket, as transit tickets from the Berlin Transport Company (BVG) are not accepted. This decision comes amid the city's ongoing budget constraints.

Initially constructed for the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) in 2017, the cable car spans approximately 1.5 kilometers, soaring to heights of up to 35 meters. It connects the Kienberg subway station to the main entrance of the Gärten der Welt (Gardens of the World) located on Blumberger Damm.

The cable car primarily serves a tourist function, facilitating access to the Gardens of the World and the adjacent Kienberg Park. According to the transportation authorities, including single tickets or multi-ride passes such as the annual ticket from the Berlin-Brandenburg transport association (VBB) would necessitate additional staffing for ticket verification.

Authorities indicated that integrating the cable car into the VBB fare system could lead to reduced revenue for its operations. Given the current fiscal challenges, such a cross-subsidy is not feasible. Consequently, there are no plans to incorporate the cable car into the VBB fare structure in the foreseeable future.

As it stands, a round-trip ticket for the cable car is priced at EUR7.50. However, visitors planning to explore the Gardens of the World can purchase a day pass for EUR12.90, which includes the cable car ride.
