Maori Queen Delivers Inaugural Public Address in New Zealand

Fri 5th Sep, 2025

In a significant moment for New Zealand's Maori community, the newly crowned Maori queen, Nga Wai hono i te po Paki, delivered her first public address on September 5, 2025. This event marked the end of a traditional mourning period following the passing of her father, King Tuheitia, in August 2024.

The 28-year-old queen broke her year-long silence to share her vision for the future of the Maori people, who represent approximately 17% of New Zealand's population. During her emotionally charged speech, she honored her father's legacy while outlining two new initiatives aimed at fostering economic independence for the Indigenous community.

In her address, the queen emphasized the need for progress, stating that external forces have historically impeded the Maori community's development. She called for collective action, urging her people to embark on a new path that aligns with contemporary times.

The event drew significant attention, with thousands of attendees, including members of the Pacific royal family and tribal chiefs from various regions. Notably absent was British King Charles III, who did not attend the ceremony held at Turangawaewae Marae, the official residence of the Maori monarch.

Nga Wai, who ascended to the throne on September 5, 2024, is the second woman to take on this role, following in the footsteps of her grandmother, Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu, the first Maori queen. Though the position of the Maori monarch is largely ceremonial and lacks legal powers, it holds immense symbolic and cultural significance within the community and influences national matters.

The queen's address marks a pivotal moment in New Zealand's ongoing journey towards recognizing and empowering its Indigenous peoples. As the Maori community continues to face challenges, including higher rates of unemployment and poverty compared to the general population, Nga Wai's initiatives could serve as a catalyst for change.

As the Maori queen steps into her role, her leadership will be closely watched as she navigates the complexities of modern governance while honoring her heritage and the aspirations of her people.
