Klingbeil Urges Union to Embrace Leadership in Constitutional Judge Elections

In light of the recent debacle surrounding the election of new constitutional judges in the Bundestag, Lars Klingbeil, the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Vice Chancellor, has called on the Union party to share in the responsibility. During the budget debate, he emphasized that true leadership and accountability extend beyond mere rhetoric, stating that contentious votes require actual commitment to leadership and responsibility. He underscored that this necessitates supporting difficult decisions, highlighting the essence of compromise.

The failure to jointly elect three candidates for the Federal Constitutional Court, backed by both the SPD and the Union, stemmed from opposition within the Union's faction against the SPD's proposed candidate, Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, who holds a liberal stance on issues regarding abortion. Moreover, the Union raised concerns over alleged plagiarism in Brosius-Gersdorf's doctoral thesis, which they claim casts doubt on her professional qualifications. However, the University of Hamburg, where she obtained her degree, has indicated that there is currently no reason to reassess her dissertation.

Klingbeil defended Brosius-Gersdorf's views on abortion, asserting that holding a critical perspective on Paragraph 218 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to abortion, is entirely legitimate in a democratic society. He warned against reducing political discourse to binary options, stressing that such an approach could undermine democratic values and institutions. The Federal Constitutional Court, as one of the country's key institutions, relies on independence and public trust, he noted.

Meanwhile, Jens Spahn, the head of the Union's parliamentary group, reiterated the Union's commitment to a stable coalition with the SPD. Following a special session, he acknowledged the challenges faced recently but affirmed the Union's dedication to effectively governing Germany. The Union intends to continue working diligently to fulfill its mandate.
