Coalition Dispute Over Judicial Candidate: Klingbeil Calls for New Election for Brosius-Gersdorf

Sun 20th Jul, 2025

The ongoing conflict within Germany's ruling coalition regarding the nomination of a candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court has intensified. Lars Klingbeil, the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has advocated for the rescheduling of the election for Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, who has been nominated by the SPD.

Klingbeil asserts that concerns surrounding Brosius-Gersdorf, particularly allegations of plagiarism, have been satisfactorily addressed. He indicated that the Bundestag should reinstate the election, emphasizing the importance of not yielding to pressure from right-wing networks that have sought to discredit a highly qualified female candidate.

Despite Klingbeil's determination to proceed with the nomination, members of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) are pressing for Brosius-Gersdorf to withdraw her candidacy, expressing a lack of urgency on the matter. The CDU had initially supported her nomination in the judicial selection committee, but the party's leadership ultimately withdrew their backing due to increasing pressure from within their ranks.

Klingbeil acknowledged the strain within the coalition but highlighted his strong working relationship with Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the CDU. He noted that regular communication is essential, especially given the challenging issues that the coalition must address moving forward. Klingbeil called for discipline among coalition members, recognizing that difficult votes are likely to continue throughout the legislative term.

The nomination of Brosius-Gersdorf, along with two other candidates for the Constitutional Court, was abruptly removed from the Bundestag's agenda following internal dissent within the CDU. This decision underscores the complexities faced by the coalition as it navigates conflicting interests and pressures from various factions.
