Juso Leader Türmer Sees No State Crisis Following Coalition Agreement Rejection

Fri 25th Apr, 2025

The current discussion surrounding the coalition agreement between the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Union has sparked significant debate among party members. Philipp Türmer, the head of the Young Socialists (Jusos), has expressed that a rejection of the proposed coalition agreement by SPD members would not lead to a state crisis. He emphasized that the two parties could engage in further negotiations to reach a new consensus, asserting that the coalition agreement is merely a framework for the next four years of governance.

As the SPD conducts a survey among its approximately 358,000 members regarding the coalition agreement until April 29, concerns have arisen particularly from the youth faction. The Jusos have voiced strong criticism towards the agreement, especially concerning its stances on migration and social policies, leading the youth organization to indicate its intention not to support the current proposal. Notably, the Jusos represent about twelve percent of the SPD's total membership.

In light of the SPD's declining poll numbers, Türmer has highlighted the need for the party to undergo a transformation regardless of the outcome of the member vote. He advocates for a programmatic realignment that would better represent the interests of workers and employees. This includes a call for new faces in key positions within the party, suggesting that fresh leadership could invigorate the organization and its alignment with the electorate.

Türmer's remarks reflect a broader concern within the SPD about its strategic direction and the necessity to resonate with the changing political landscape. The upcoming vote among party members serves as a crucial moment for the SPD, as it navigates internal dissent and seeks to establish a unified front moving forward.
