Jens Spahn Set to Become New Leader of CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group

Thu 24th Apr, 2025

Jens Spahn, a prominent member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is poised to take on the role of the new leader of the parliamentary group for the Union in the Bundestag. Reports indicate that the leadership of both the CDU and the Christian Social Union (CSU) have come to a consensus regarding his appointment.

Speculation surrounding Spahn's potential elevation to this key position has been circulating for some time. A leading German publication recently suggested that this move aligns with the wishes of CDU leader Friedrich Merz; however, the support of CSU leader Markus Söder remains pending. A spokesperson for the Union's parliamentary group has emphasized that decisions concerning leadership appointments will be made promptly.

Initial responses from Union sources regarding this report were cautious, stating that both Merz and Söder would propose a candidate "in due course." Following this proposal, the 208 members of the CDU and CSU parliamentary factions will need to approve the nomination by majority vote.

Currently, the CDU parliamentary group is under the leadership of Merz, who is expected to be elected as Chancellor on May 6. This election is contingent upon the approval of a coalition agreement by a smaller CDU party conference scheduled for April 28, and by the members of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) by April 29. The CSU has already endorsed the coalition agreement.

Prior to this anticipated change, Spahn served as the deputy chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group and has been a significant figure in German politics, particularly during his tenure as the Federal Minister of Health. His potential leadership position could signal a shift in the direction of the parliamentary group as it prepares to navigate upcoming legislative challenges and the political landscape in Germany.
