Iran Faces Renewed UN Sanctions Amid Limited IAEA Inspections

Sat 27th Sep, 2025

As the reinstatement of United Nations sanctions against Iran looms, the Islamic Republic has permitted inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to enter the country, albeit with restrictions. Reports indicate that inspections took place recently, but they do not encompass the comprehensive oversight that Western nations have been advocating for.

The IAEA has not disclosed the specific facilities that were inspected. However, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi mentioned a visit to a research reactor in a recent interview with a US broadcaster. Sources close to diplomatic discussions highlight that the IAEA still lacks access to certain sites previously targeted by Israel and the United States.

The sanctions, expected to be reinstated early Sunday, stem from concerns that Iran is in violation of the 2015 nuclear agreement. Germany, the United Kingdom, and France activated the so-called snapback mechanism to reintroduce these sanctions due to Iran's alleged production of highly enriched uranium, which could potentially be used for nuclear weapons. Iran has consistently refuted such allegations.

To date, Iran has not complied with European demands for enhanced cooperation with the IAEA and the resumption of nuclear negotiations. As a result, the sanctions are set to be enforced as planned. In response, Iran's National Security Council has warned that it may terminate its agreement with the IAEA concerning the reinstatement of nuclear inspections.
