Investigators Conduct Searches at CDU, SPD, and AfD Offices in Saxony-Anhalt Parliament

Authorities in Magdeburg have launched an investigation into potential financial misconduct involving the CDU, SPD, and AfD parties within the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament. This action follows allegations of misappropriation of funds, specifically concerning the payment of unauthorized allowances to party officials.

An official from the Magdeburg public prosecutor's office confirmed that searches were being conducted at the party offices due to suspicions of embezzlement. The investigations are based on a report submitted by the Taxpayers' Association of Germany, which raised concerns over the legality of certain financial practices within these political groups.

According to Ralf Seibicke from the Taxpayers' Association, the allegations stem from claims that members of the CDU faction received allowances not stipulated by law. Initially, the Magdeburg public prosecutor's office dismissed this case, but the Taxpayers' Association successfully appealed this decision, prompting a reinvestigation.

The operation, carried out in coordination with the State Criminal Police Office, is backed by court orders issued by the Magdeburg District Court. Investigators are particularly focused on obtaining documentation related to the controversial allowances that have reportedly been withheld.

An unnamed staff member from a non-involved parliamentary faction indicated that the searches primarily aim to uncover records related to the disputed payments. Patrick Harr, spokesperson for the AfD faction, acknowledged the ongoing investigations but declined to provide further details at this time.

The scrutiny surrounding the CDU faction intensified in June 2023 when internal disputes arose regarding the additional payments received by Vice-Faction Leader Frank Bommersbach and Deputy Parliamentary Manager Sandra Heuer-Hietel. Concerns were raised about the need for a formal review by the State Audit Office before proceeding with such financial arrangements.
