Casualties Rise to Over 50 in Indonesian School Structure Collapse

Mon 6th Oct, 2025

The aftermath of a devastating school building collapse in Indonesia continues to unfold, with the confirmed death toll now exceeding 50 individuals. This tragic incident took place at the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school located in Sidoarjo, East Java, where students, primarily teenage boys, were assembled for afternoon prayers when a section of the building suddenly gave way.

Rescue operations are still in progress, as search teams work tirelessly to locate 13 additional individuals who remain unaccounted for. By late Sunday, rescuers had successfully recovered numerous bodies and body parts while clearing away approximately 80% of the debris. According to Yudhi Bramantyo, an official from the search and rescue agency, the discovery of further remains suggests the death toll could rise to at least 54.

Visuals released by the search and rescue teams depicted rescuers transporting orange body bags out from beneath the rubble, highlighting the grim reality of the situation. Budi Irawan, a deputy at the disaster mitigation agency, noted that the number of fatalities from this incident is the highest recorded in a single building disaster throughout 2025. He remarked that there have been no other incidents this year, whether natural or otherwise, that have resulted in as many casualties as the collapse in Sidoarjo.

An investigation is currently underway to ascertain the cause of the building's failure. Preliminary assessments by experts indicate that substandard construction practices may have played a significant role in the disaster. The Indonesian government is expected to take measures to address construction safety standards in the wake of this tragedy.
