Increased Passenger Traffic at Berlin Airport Following Cyberattack

Fri 3rd Oct, 2025

Two weeks after a significant cyberattack affected operations at Berlin's Brandenburg Airport (BER), the airport is experiencing a surge in passenger traffic due to a public holiday. The airport's spokesperson noted that while the terminals are quite crowded, operations are proceeding in an orderly manner despite the disruptions caused by the recent cyber incident.

On the German Unity Day, the airport anticipates welcoming approximately 90,000 travelers, with numbers expected to rise to nearly 96,000 by Sunday. This influx marks a notable increase compared to regular days. Passengers are advised to check for updates with their respective airlines for specific information regarding their flights.

The cyberattack, which targeted the airport service provider Collins Aerospace, also impacted several airports across Europe. The incident rendered key electronic systems inoperable, affecting passenger and baggage processing capabilities at BER. Consequently, many check-in procedures are now being handled manually, although passengers can still utilize operational self-service kiosks for check-in and baggage drop-off.

Despite the increased demand and some lingering effects from the cyberattack, the airport maintains that the majority of flights are operating as scheduled. However, travelers should remain prepared for potential delays during check-in, boarding, and baggage claim processes.

The airport is actively working to restore its IT systems, with the goal of full functionality by Sunday. Following thorough testing, airlines are expected to be gradually reconnected to the airport's systems in the coming days.
