In a dangerous display of speed, two drivers participated in an illegal street race on the Berlin Stadtautobahn A100, exceeding speeds of 170 kilometers per hour. Authorities reported that the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, when police officers in plain clothes were conducting surveillance on the highway.
Around 1:30 AM, officers observed a Mercedes and an Audi overtaking their unmarked vehicle at significantly high speeds. Both cars continued to race alongside each other, maintaining their excessive velocity. According to police reports, the drivers momentarily slowed down while passing through the Britz tunnel before accelerating again and making reckless lane changes.
As the Audi exited the A100 at the Buschkrugallee junction, police initiated a pursuit. The officers successfully stopped the vehicle at the intersection of Buschkrugallee and Hannemannstraße. They confiscated the Audi and the driver's license from the 28-year-old driver, along with his three passengers who were subsequently released. The driver of the Mercedes managed to evade capture, and investigations into his identity are still ongoing.
This incident is part of a troubling trend in Berlin, where illegal street racing has become increasingly common. Authorities have noted a rise in such activities across the city, prompting heightened surveillance by plainclothes officers in unmarked vehicles. Earlier incidents have resulted in severe consequences, including fatalities linked to illegal racing.
Berlin has gained notoriety for its high number of racing incidents. A particularly tragic event occurred in February 2016, when an innocent motorist lost their life due to the reckless actions of racers on the Kurfürstendamm. The city continues to grapple with the challenges posed by illegal street racing, as law enforcement seeks to deter such dangerous behavior.
