Health System in Gaza on Verge of Collapse, Warns UN Amid Ongoing Conflict

Tue 31st Dec, 2024

Since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, the situation in the Middle East has deteriorated significantly. Israel is engaged in military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip and is facing hostilities from the Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon, where a fragile ceasefire currently exists.

International arrest warrants have been issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas commander Mohammed Deif on suspicion of war crimes linked to the ongoing conflict.

Critical Humanitarian Situation

The United Nations has reported that the health system in Gaza is nearing total collapse due to Israeli airstrikes. According to a report from the UN Human Rights Office in Geneva, the series of deadly assaults on hospitals and medical facilities has brought the healthcare system to the brink. Between October 2023 and June 2024, there were at least 136 documented attacks on 27 hospitals and 12 other medical establishments, resulting in significant casualties among healthcare workers and civilians.

The claims made by Israel that these facilities are being used by armed groups such as Hamas have been described as vague and lacking substantial evidence. UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk has emphasized that hospitals in the region have become 'death traps' and have called for the protection of medical facilities during wartime, which must be respected by all parties involved.

Impact of Military Operations

Recent statements from the International Red Cross indicate that healthcare services in northern Gaza have been 'devastated' by Israeli military actions, rendering hospitals non-operational. The health authority in Gaza, controlled by Hamas, claims that over 45,500 fatalities have occurred in the Strip since the onset of the conflict, although these figures cannot be independently verified.

Furthermore, Israeli security forces have arrested approximately 2,500 Palestinians in Gaza in 2024, with 650 of these individuals reportedly interrogated. Reports from the Shin Bet internal security agency suggest that this led to the recovery of nine bodies of individuals who had been abducted during the Hamas assault.

Severe Weather Complications

In addition to the ongoing conflict, severe weather conditions have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis. Heavy rainfall has caused flooding in various parts of the Gaza Strip, affecting internally displaced persons living in makeshift camps. Reports on social media depict children wading through floodwaters, highlighting the dire living conditions faced by many as winter approaches.

Humanitarian organizations have warned of rising health issues among children due to inadequate shelter during the cold months, which has already resulted in fatalities among infants due to hypothermia. The United Nations has indicated that nearly one million people in Gaza lack proper housing as they face winter without adequate resources.

Medical Evacuations and Ongoing Attacks

In a recent development, 45 patients were evacuated from Gaza for treatment in the United Arab Emirates, passing through the Kerem Shalom border crossing. Among the evacuees was a ten-year-old boy requiring urgent kidney treatment.

Meanwhile, the Houthi militia from Yemen has claimed responsibility for launching attacks on airports in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, escalating tensions further. The militia announced that they targeted the Ben Gurion Airport and power facilities in Jerusalem with ballistic missiles.

As the conflict continues, reports of casualties among Israeli soldiers have emerged from various attacks claimed by Hamas, underscoring the ongoing violence and instability in the region.

International Response

In response to the violence, the World Health Organization has reiterated its call for a ceasefire and condemned the attacks on healthcare facilities in Gaza. The WHO has urged for the immediate release of a hospital director detained during military operations, emphasizing the need for the protection of healthcare workers and infrastructure.

As the situation unfolds, the international community remains concerned about the humanitarian implications of the conflict, with calls for accountability and adherence to international law growing louder.
