Hamas Releases Three More Hostages Amid Ongoing Conflict

Sat 1st Feb, 2025

The militant group Hamas has initiated the release of three hostages in the Gaza Strip as part of a broader ceasefire agreement with Israel. Footage broadcasted live showed the handover of Ofer Kalderon (54) and Jarden Bibas (35) in Khan Younis, Southern Gaza, to representatives of the Red Cross. The Israeli military confirmed their release was communicated by the Red Cross, and both individuals are now being transferred to a military facility. Additionally, a third hostage, Keith Siegel, aged 65 and a dual U.S.-Israeli national, was also released in Gaza City.

This release is occurring under an arrangement that specifies the exchange of hostages for the freedom of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. Reports indicate that Israel plans to release 90 Palestinian detainees, including nine who are serving life sentences. Furthermore, Israeli media have indicated that the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza will be reopened as part of this agreement.

In the footage, Kalderon and Bibas were seen greeting attendees as they were welcomed back after their extensive captivity. Unlike previous hostage releases, the crowd present was relatively small this time. The three men had been held for 484 days before their release, and they are expected to be taken to an Israeli military base to reunite with their families before receiving medical attention.

In related developments, Palestinian sources revealed that Israel will release a significantly higher number of prisoners than initially anticipated, now reported to be 183 inmates. Amani Sarahneh, a spokesperson for a Palestinian NGO, confirmed this update.

In another significant political event, U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, as confirmed by the White House press office.

In Syria, security forces arrested Atef Najib, a cousin of the ousted leader Bashar al-Assad, in the coastal city of Latakia. Najib is accused of orchestrating violent actions in the southern city of Daraa, which was a focal point of protests in 2011. He will face accountability for his actions against the Syrian people.

Concerns have been raised by Germany, France, and the UK regarding Israel's ban on the Palestinian aid organization UNRWA. In a joint statement, the foreign ministers urged Israel to reconsider the ban, emphasizing that no other organization possesses the necessary capacity to replace UNRWA's vital role in delivering humanitarian assistance to Palestinian refugees.

On the humanitarian front, the European Union has resumed its monitoring operations at the Rafah crossing, responding to requests from both Palestinian and Israeli officials. This mission aims to assist in the safe passage of individuals, particularly those in need of medical care.

In the meantime, the United Nations has called for the urgent evacuation of 2,500 children from Gaza for medical treatment, as many are reportedly gravely ill. This comes amid a dire need for medical evacuations, with estimates indicating that between 12,000 to 14,000 individuals require urgent medical assistance outside of Gaza.

The situation remains fluid, and further developments are anticipated as both sides navigate this complex humanitarian and political landscape.
