Green Party Seeks Clarifications on Heightened Border Controls

The German government has recently intensified border controls, eliciting criticism from neighboring EU countries. In response, the Green Party has submitted a series of inquiries to the federal government seeking clarification on this policy shift.

A group of Green Party politicians, including the parliamentary leader and the interior policy spokesperson, have formulated a list of 18 questions directed at the Federal Ministry of the Interior. This inquiry, which will be formally submitted on Monday, aims to address the legal basis for the government's directive to deny entry to asylum seekers at the borders. Additionally, they seek information regarding the number of federal police officers deployed for border control activities and the frequency of unstaffed police posts in recent months.

The deputy parliamentary leader of the Green Party has criticized the current administration for what he describes as a reliance on symbolic politics that could adversely affect both the economy and European integration. He expressed concerns over the legality of denying entry to asylum seekers, labeling such actions as potentially in violation of European law, and characterized the approach taken by the government as chaotic.

The new government is implementing stricter border controls as part of its strategy to manage unwanted migration. Earlier this week, the Federal Minister of the Interior instructed the federal police to enhance border surveillance and to turn away asylum applicants. Critics argue that these measures may conflict with EU regulations and pose a threat to the integrity of the EU's internal market, which is designed to allow free movement within member states.
