Google Addresses Battery Overheating Issues in Pixel 6a with Software Update

Thu 12th Jun, 2025

In response to reported overheating issues, Google has announced a software update for its Pixel 6a smartphone that will reduce the device's battery capacity. This decision follows similar challenges faced by earlier models, including the Pixel 4a and Pixel 7a, which have also experienced battery-related problems.

A Google representative confirmed that a subset of Pixel 6a devices will receive this mandatory update, which is designed to activate a battery management feature. This feature will limit both the battery capacity and charging power after the device has undergone 400 charging cycles. Affected users can expect direct communication from Google in the coming month, detailing the necessary steps to implement this update.

While the overheating issue does not appear to affect all Pixel 6a units, the situation is serious enough that at least two incidents have been reported where devices caught fire. In one instance, a user described their Pixel 6a spontaneously igniting while it was charging overnight.

Reports indicate that Google has been aware of these battery concerns for some time. Clues regarding potential overheating problems were uncovered in the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2, which included a warning for Pixel 6a users that they might face battery overheating issues after reaching 375 charging cycles. Additionally, the warning directed users to a support page that is yet to be activated.

This incident marks the third occurrence of battery issues with Google's Pixel devices within a six-month timeframe. Following the Pixel 4a incident earlier this year, where a similar update was released to mitigate overheating risks, Google also addressed battery swelling problems in the Pixel 7a, for which the company initiated an extended repair program.

Overall, these developments underscore the ongoing challenges Google faces with its Pixel smartphone lineup, as the company works to ensure user safety and device reliability while maintaining customer trust in its products.
