Google Discontinues Gmailify and POP Support for Gmail Users

Thu 2nd Oct, 2025

Google has announced significant changes to its Gmail service, set to take effect at the start of next year. The tech giant will be discontinuing the Gmailify feature and support for the POP3 (Post Office Protocol) method of email retrieval.

Introduced in 2016, Gmailify allowed users to integrate certain Gmail functionalities--such as spam protection, advanced search capabilities, and a categorized inbox--into external email accounts. However, starting January 2026, users will no longer have access to these features for their third-party email accounts. This means that functionality like spam filtering and organized inboxes will not be available for non-Gmail addresses.

Additionally, Google has indicated that features such as improved email notifications on mobile devices and enhanced search functionalities will also be removed. As a replacement, Google suggests that users can still read and send emails from different accounts within the Gmail app by using a standard IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) connection.

In parallel with the removal of Gmailify, Google is also eliminating support for the POP3 protocol. Consequently, users will no longer be able to retrieve emails from external accounts via this older method. The option to import messages from other accounts through Gmail on desktop will also be discontinued.

Google emphasizes that these changes will solely impact the methods of email retrieval. Any emails that have already been synchronized will remain accessible in users' Gmail accounts. The company encourages users with work or educational accounts to consult their administrators for assistance regarding migration to Google Workspace and adjusting to the new protocols.

With these updates, Google aims to streamline the Gmail experience, ensuring that users engage with their email in the most secure and up-to-date manner possible.
