As Poland implements new border checks, Germany is gearing up to manage potential traffic disruptions that may arise as a result. The German Federal Ministry of the Interior has announced its commitment to minimizing congestion on the German side of the border, particularly along the A12 highway in Brandenburg, where delays have already been observed due to existing German checks.
The planned Polish border controls, set to begin shortly, come in response to Germany's ongoing measures aimed at curbing irregular migration. Germany has been conducting spot checks at the Polish border since October 2023, and the increase in scrutiny was intensified by Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt earlier this year.
Authorities in both countries are expressing concerns that these heightened border controls will exacerbate traffic issues in the region. Brandenburg's Interior Minister, René Wilke, alongside local chambers of commerce, has issued warnings about the likelihood of significant traffic jams.
Currently, traffic congestion is a common occurrence on the Polish side of the border due to the existing German checks. In light of this, Brandenburg's Minister President, Dietmar Woidke, has called for collaborative solutions, including the possibility of adding a third lane specifically for border processing on the A12.
The German Federal Ministry is exploring various options to alleviate these traffic issues. Discussions are underway regarding possible infrastructural modifications along the A12 that could facilitate smoother border crossing experiences. The Federal Police are tasked with choosing inspection locations that balance operational necessities with traffic flow considerations.
Woidke has advocated for joint border checks conducted by both German and Polish police forces, emphasizing that while the German government is responsible for securing its external borders, there is room for improvement in coordination with Polish authorities. He has raised questions about the rationale behind separate checks and called for a cohesive approach to border management, suggesting that such cooperation would signal a unified front on security matters.
This situation underscores ongoing challenges related to migration and border security in Europe, highlighting the need for cooperative strategies to ensure efficient travel and trade while maintaining security standards.
