Germany's International Strategy Shift Amid Trump's Influence

In light of recent global political shifts, experts emphasize the necessity for Germany to recalibrate its international relations, particularly in the wake of Donald Trump's return to the U.S. presidency. An expert commission, led by former Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, has outlined recommendations for the next German government to enhance the nation's standing on the world stage, especially with countries in the so-called Global South.

During a recent discussion in Berlin, Kramp-Karrenbauer highlighted the importance of addressing the evolving geopolitical landscape, noting that the U.S. under Trump's leadership may retreat from collaborative efforts on crucial issues such as climate protection. She stressed that Germany must act swiftly to fill the potential void left by U.S. disengagement.

The commission, under the initiative 'Global Perspectives', aims to provide a strategic framework for Germany's foreign policy, urging the next government to foster deeper ties with emerging economies, particularly in Africa. Kramp-Karrenbauer underscored that many nations in the Global South are unaware of Germany's international priorities and that Germany's attractiveness as a partner is diminishing due to rising xenophobia and bureaucratic challenges.

To address these challenges, the commission proposes the establishment of a national security council to oversee and coordinate bilateral relations, along with a comprehensive database to streamline information regarding Germany's international engagements. Furthermore, they recommend the creation of a national immigration agency to facilitate labor migration, thereby alleviating the ongoing skilled labor shortage in Germany. This agency would centralize responsibilities related to visas, residence permits, and the recognition of professional qualifications, differentiating it from existing immigration authorities.

Kramp-Karrenbauer pointed out that effective migration policies should aim to benefit not only Germany but also the migrants and their countries of origin, advocating for a collaborative approach termed 'Triple-Win'. She noted that the negative perception of Germany, stemming from domestic issues like housing shortages and lengthy immigration processes, could deter potential partnerships.
