Transition to Spring: Temperatures Set to Reach Double Digits

Fri 21st Feb, 2025

The winter chill is finally receding as Germany prepares for a weekend of unseasonably warm weather. Meteorologists are predicting a significant rise in temperatures, with daytime highs expected to reach double digits across the country. Following a week characterized by bitterly cold conditions, with some regions experiencing temperatures well below freezing, the arrival of milder weather marks a pleasant change.

According to forecasts from the German Weather Service (DWD), areas in Germany are set to experience temperatures soaring up to 16 degrees Celsius on Sunday, coinciding with the federal election. This warm spell is attributed to a shift in atmospheric conditions, primarily driven by the retreat of high-pressure system Fenja and the influence of low-pressure systems Nico and Orkan. These factors are facilitating the influx of warm air masses into Central Europe.

As the weekend approaches, the DWD anticipates that the mild temperatures will persist not only on Saturday and Sunday but also into the following week. The warmest regions are expected to be those along the Rhine River, where temperatures could reach the highest levels.

In terms of precipitation, the outlook remains largely dry, with the exception of some isolated showers potentially affecting the far northern and northwestern parts of the country. The eastern regions will likely see clearer skies, with temperatures ranging from 7 to 11 degrees, while other areas could enjoy warmth between 12 and 17 degrees.

On the day of the elections, the weather will start off with an overcast sky in the east and south, along with scattered light rain. However, conditions are set to improve later in the day, leading to clearer skies and more sunshine nationwide. Voters planning to head to the polls might consider timing their visits for later in the day to enjoy the pleasant conditions.

While the daytime temperatures will be more comfortable, nighttime frosts are still a possibility, especially in central Germany and Bavaria, although these are expected to be mild. As the week progresses, forecasts indicate a likelihood of widespread rainfall beginning Monday, which will affect a large part of the country.
