Germany's Commitment to Afghan Refugees Under Scrutiny Amid Travel Delays

Sat 26th Apr, 2025

Currently, 2,600 Afghan individuals who have received confirmation of their admission are awaiting entry into Germany. The decision regarding their actual travel to the country is set to be determined by the next federal government. The Federal Foreign Office has announced that no flights are scheduled in the upcoming two weeks. However, visa processing and admission evaluations will continue to take place.

The incoming coalition government, comprising members from the Union and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has indicated its intention to halt the admission program. They plan to reassess individual acceptance guarantees and may withdraw some of them. This program, initiated four years ago by the previous grand coalition, has successfully facilitated the entry of approximately 38,000 Afghans who faced threats from the Taliban.

In a related political landscape, the Sahra Wagenknecht-led alliance is set to elect the Thuringian state party board today in Gera. On the eve of the elections, Wagenknecht addressed the candidates, signaling a critical moment in a protracted power struggle within the party. Tensions have escalated between Wagenknecht and the current chair of the Thuringian BSW party, Katja Wolf, particularly following the loss in the last federal elections.

In a communication to the Thuringian BSW members, Wagenknecht expressed concerns about a breach of trust between the national and state leaderships. She advocates for a restructuring of the board and has endorsed Landtag member Anke Wirsing for the upcoming vote. Political analyst Lisa Caspari examines the implications of Wolf's sudden fall from favor and the potential impact of this election on the party's future direction.
