Champagne Sales Decline Significantly in Germany

Wed 19th Mar, 2025

In a notable shift, the consumption of champagne in Germany has seen a significant downturn over the past year. The volume of French sparkling wine sold in the country dropped sharply by 18.5% in 2024, according to the Comité Champagne, the association representing champagne producers. This decline translates to a reduction in the number of champagne bottles imported into Germany, which fell from 11.6 million to 9.51 million.

The financial impact is also evident, with revenue from champagne sales in Germany decreasing from EUR268 million to EUR228.8 million. Despite this downturn, there is a growing trend towards premium champagne, indicating that while overall sales are down, consumers are increasingly opting for higher-priced options.

On a global scale, the champagne industry faced challenges as well, reporting an overall sales decline of 9.2% in the past year. Factors contributing to this decline include economic crises, geopolitical conflicts, and sluggish economic performance in key markets. The vice-president of the Comité Champagne remarked that champagne serves as a reliable indicator of consumer sentiment, highlighting the current economic climate characterized by inflation and global uncertainties.

Champagne, a prestigious beverage, is exclusively produced in the Champagne region of France, which spans approximately 34,000 hectares. The stringent regulations governing its production, including hand harvesting of grapes, ensure the quality and reputation of this iconic drink.
