Initiative Aims to Utilize Climate Protection Funds for Aviation Industry

A coalition comprising 14 associations and unions is urging the newly formed government to provide financial relief for the aviation sector, linking its demands to the upcoming multi-billion euro financial package proposed by the federal government. The group asserts that the aviation industry in Germany has become excessively costly, risking a decline in competitiveness and weakening the country's connections to global markets.

Key organizations involved include the Federal Association of German Aviation Industry (BDL), the Federation of German Industries, IG Metall, the Airport Association (ADV), and various tourism bodies. In a joint statement, they outlined eight measures aimed at bolstering Germany's aviation sector. Among the primary suggestions is a reduction in government costs associated with the industry and support for future technologies.

One significant proposal is to increase the allocation from the special fund to promote sustainable aviation fuels and enhance research and technological development. The agreement within the coalition of the Union, SPD, and Greens indicates that EUR100 billion from the new debt fund for infrastructure and climate protection will be directed into the Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF).

The initiative also calls for the elimination of the aviation tax or at least a reduction to the levels seen in 2011. Additionally, it seeks to lessen bureaucratic burdens and channel more funding into national aviation research initiatives. Expanding the hydrogen ecosystem for new aircraft propulsion systems--from production to transport and refueling--is another focal point for development.

The aviation sector believes that high state taxes and fees are primary factors contributing to its sluggish recovery compared to other European countries post-COVID-19. Industry leaders emphasize the necessity of investing in innovative technologies to meet climate targets rather than imposing further financial burdens on the sector.

According to the President of BDL, there is a pressing need for affordable sustainable fuels and new propulsion systems to actively facilitate the transformation of the aviation industry. The push for these initiatives reflects the growing recognition of the aviation sector's vital role in the economy and its potential for sustainable development.
