German Armed Forces Face Decline in Personnel Numbers

Sat 1st Feb, 2025

The German Armed Forces, known as the Bundeswehr, have reported a decrease in personnel numbers despite an increase in recruitment efforts. As of the end of last year, the total number of soldiers stood at approximately 181,150, a slight drop from around 181,500 recorded at the same time the previous year, according to a spokesperson from the Ministry of Defense.

This decline particularly affected the number of temporary soldiers, while a modest increase was noted among professional soldiers and conscripts. In comparison, the Bundeswehr had 183,050 personnel at the end of 2022, significantly below the target strength of 203,000 troops that had been established prior to the ongoing geopolitical tensions, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Despite the overall decrease, the Ministry of Defense emphasized a positive trend in recruitment, reporting approximately 20,300 new hires, which marks an 8% increase compared to 2023. This represents an addition of roughly 1,500 new soldiers, making 2024 the most successful year for recruitment in the past five years.

In addition to active-duty personnel, the Bundeswehr also employed around 81,600 civilian staff, a slight increase from the previous year. Furthermore, about 20,100 individuals served in a reserve capacity, including approximately 1,700 women, compared to 19,100 reservists in 2023, of whom 1,400 were women.

The Ministry's report highlights the ongoing challenges in meeting personnel targets amid changing defense needs, particularly in light of the military's evolving role in national and alliance defense. The call for more soldiers remains critical, as the armed forces adapt to new security realities.
