In a devastating incident, a gas tanker truck exploded on a highway in Mexico City, resulting in the loss of three lives and injuring 67 others. The explosion occurred in the Iztapalapa district, a densely populated area in the southeastern part of the capital.

The explosion took place beneath a highway overpass, leading to a significant fire and the release of smoke that filled the surrounding area. Local authorities reported extensive damage to the highway and numerous vehicles caught in the blast.

Among the injured, at least 19 individuals suffered severe burns, classified as second- and third-degree. Emergency services promptly transported the wounded to various hospitals across the city for urgent medical care.

Clara Brugada, the head of government for Mexico City, described the incident as an "emergency" and indicated that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the explosion. Preliminary reports suggest that the explosion was triggered when the gas truck, carrying approximately 49,500 liters (13,076 gallons) of gas, tipped over on the highway before igniting.

Eyewitness accounts and images from the scene revealed the overturned truck engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading to more than a dozen other vehicles involved in the incident. The truck's explosion occurred on a vital roadway that facilitates travel from Mexico City to the city of Puebla, exacerbating the situation.

In response to the incident, the city government has announced that the affected highway will remain closed until further notice as cleanup and investigation efforts continue.

This tragic event underscores the ongoing challenges related to transportation safety and emergency response in urban environments, highlighting the need for rigorous safety measures in the handling of hazardous materials.
