Fruit Farmers Battle Night Frost in Brandenburg

Sun 6th Apr, 2025

As spring progresses, fruit growers in Brandenburg face a daunting challenge as night frosts return, threatening their delicate crops. After suffering significant damage last year due to similar conditions, farmers are on high alert to protect their blossoms from freezing temperatures.

In an effort to mitigate the impact of the cold, many farmers are employing various methods, including irrigation systems and warm air blowers. Reports from local farms indicate that temperatures dropped to between -4 and -5 degrees Celsius during the night. This poses a serious risk, as blossoms can be damaged at temperatures as mild as -0.5 degrees Celsius. Buds that are still in the budding stage are particularly vulnerable.

To safeguard these sensitive flowers, farmers are spraying them with water. This technique is contingent upon the availability of sufficient water. Additionally, gas heaters have been utilized to generate warm air, although complete protection of all plants is not feasible. The crops at risk include apricot, plum, sweet cherry, and apple blossoms.

Farmers believe that the extent of the frost damage will only become apparent in the coming days. The frost's return is particularly concerning, as last year's frost events resulted in significant harvest losses. The Garden Association estimated that damages in June 2024 reached between 10 to 14 million euros, with some harvests being completely devastated. Frost nights had particularly severe effects on apple and cherry trees.

The German Weather Service forecasts continued cold nights, with temperatures expected to drop again to around -4 degrees Celsius and possibly even -7 degrees in certain areas.
