French Anesthesiologist Faces Trial for Allegedly Poisoning Patients

Mon 8th Sep, 2025

A former anesthesiologist is on trial in France accused of poisoning 30 patients, resulting in the deaths of twelve individuals. The trial for 53-year-old Frédéric Péchier commenced on Monday in Besançon, eastern France. Authorities believe he may have administered toxic substances to his patients with the intent of harming other medical professionals.

According to investigators, Péchier allegedly adulterated intravenous infusions to induce cardiac arrests during surgeries. The prosecution suggests that he targeted healthy patients to create difficulties for colleagues with whom he had conflicts. In certain instances, he reportedly portrayed himself as a hero during the resuscitation efforts of the affected individuals.

Péchier has denied all allegations against him and expressed his intention to defend himself vigorously in court. He stated that he understands the pain of the victims' families but insists he bears no responsibility for the tragic outcomes.

The prosecution intends to focus on more recent cases that led to the charges being filed in 2017. One significant case involves a 36-year-old patient who survived a cardiac arrest, during which a potentially lethal dose of potassium chloride was discovered in her IV. This substance is infamously associated with executions.

Frédéric Berna, an attorney representing several of the approximately 150 co-plaintiffs in the case, described the situation as appalling, emphasizing that the alleged poisonings were purposeful and that Péchier had no legitimate connection to the victims.

If convicted, the former doctor could face a life sentence in prison. A verdict is expected on December 19.
