Wed 1st Oct, 2025

In a recent incident in Köln, authorities have uncovered a fraud scheme involving three individuals who attempted to take a German language proficiency exam under false identities. The incident occurred on the morning of September 30, 2025, at a language school located on Graeffstraße in the district of Köln-Neuehrenfeld.

The suspects, aged 54, 36, and 40, were apprehended by police after a vigilant witness, a 64-year-old individual, alerted law enforcement officials. The witness provided police with counterfeit passports originating from Guinea, Ghana, and Togo. Investigations revealed that the men had participated in the exam using the identities listed in these fraudulent documents, allegedly to obtain language certification unlawfully.

Interestingly, all three suspects also possessed German identification cards, adding complexity to the case. Authorities have since broadened their investigation, looking into the individuals whose names appeared on the falsified passports, who are aged 44, 36, and 38.

During a search operation conducted in Hamburg, law enforcement officials arrested a 34-year-old man who was found to be residing in Germany without legal authorization. This discovery has prompted further inquiries into his situation and potential connections to the ongoing fraud investigation.

The Cologne police department's investigative unit, known as KK 35, is continuing to pursue leads in this case. The ramifications of this incident raise significant concerns regarding the integrity of language certification processes and the measures in place to prevent such fraudulent activities.

This case highlights the importance of vigilance in educational settings, especially in language proficiency assessments, which play a critical role in integration processes for non-native speakers in Germany.
