Former Police Officer Sentenced to 33 Months for the Killing of Breonna Taylor

Tue 22nd Jul, 2025

A former police officer involved in the deadly shooting of Breonna Taylor has been sentenced to 33 months in prison. This decision was made by District Judge Rebecca Jennings, who issued the ruling on Monday, countering a recommendation from the U.S. Department of Justice that had sought a mere one-day sentence for the officer.

Breonna Taylor, an African American woman, was fatally shot in March 2020 during a police raid at her apartment in Louisville, Kentucky. The raid was part of a narcotics investigation, and her death became a significant moment in the Black Lives Matter movement. The officer, Brett Hankison, was found guilty of violating civil rights in connection with the incident and faced a potential life sentence.

Although Hankison's bullets did not strike Taylor, he fired shots blindly through a covered bedroom window. He is the only officer convicted in relation to the raid, while four other police officers are also facing charges.

During the raid, Taylor's boyfriend, believing they were victims of a home invasion, fired his legally owned weapon in response, prompting police to return fire, which tragically resulted in Taylor's death.

In an unusual move, Harmeet Dhillon, the head of the Civil Rights Division at the Justice Department under President Donald Trump, had urged Judge Jennings to impose only a symbolic sentence equivalent to the time already served by Hankison. The attorneys representing Taylor's family expressed their dissatisfaction with the leniency sought by the Justice Department, stating that while the sentence imposed does not fully reflect the severity of the harm caused, it is still an improvement over what was initially recommended.

They remarked that they respect the court's decision but will continue to emphasize the Justice Department's failure to advocate strongly for the rights of Breonna Taylor and other Black women whose lives are often undervalued.

The tragic deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd during police encounters in 2020 ignited widespread protests across the United States against police violence and systemic racism, underscoring the ongoing issues of law enforcement practices and racial inequality.
