Ferrari has revealed the first significant details about its upcoming all-electric vehicle, currently referred to as the Elettrica. Marking a major milestone in the Italian automaker's history, this model will be Ferrari's first fully battery-powered car and is set to launch in 2026. The company aims to maintain its core brand values in the realm of electric mobility by focusing on both innovative technology and high performance.
Design and PlatformThe Elettrica will be a four-door, four-seater model, signaling a departure from Ferrari's traditional two-door sports car format. The vehicle is being developed with a completely new battery system, designed and produced in-house at Ferrari's Maranello facility. The battery is a 122 kWh unit, notable for its volumetric energy density of nearly 280 Wh/L, which is among the highest available in production vehicles.
Battery System and RangeThe Elettrica's battery comprises 15 modules containing a total of 210 pouch cells supplied by SK, a South Korean battery manufacturer. The modules are integrated into the vehicle floor between the axles, with 13 placed as low as possible and two located beneath the rear seats. This arrangement enables a lower center of gravity, reportedly 80 mm lower than Ferrari's combustion engine models, enhancing the vehicle's stability and handling.
With an 800-volt architecture, the Elettrica supports a maximum charging capacity of 350 kW. Under optimal conditions, the vehicle can recover up to 300 kilometers of range in approximately 20 minutes. On a full charge, the total driving range is expected to exceed 530 kilometers, although Ferrari has not yet provided specific consumption figures.
Performance and PowertrainBoth the front and rear axles of the Elettrica are equipped with permanent magnet synchronous motors featuring Halbach rotors. The front axle delivers 210 kW, while the rear provides 620 kW, resulting in a combined output of over 800 kW. The front and rear motors are paired with dedicated gearboxes and inverters, with the front achieving an efficiency of 90% and the rear 93%.
The powertrain configuration allows the front axle to be disengaged depending on the selected driving mode, optimizing energy consumption. Additionally, the vehicle supports torque vectoring due to each wheel being powered by its own motor, enhancing agility and performance.
Chassis and Driving DynamicsTo address the absence of engine sound typical of electric vehicles, Ferrari has implemented a mechanically damped subframe to minimize noise and vibration within the cabin. The rear wheels can turn up to 2.15 degrees in the direction of travel, improving stability and maneuverability. Each damper features a 48-volt actuator, enabling individual adjustment of damping at each wheel for superior ride quality.
Market Outlook and Production TargetsOriginally, Ferrari had targeted a 40% share of electric vehicles in its total sales by 2030. However, the company has since revised this goal, now aiming for electric vehicles to account for 20% of its registrations by the end of the decade. The Elettrica is a crucial element in Ferrari's plan to adapt to changing market demands while preserving the brand's focus on performance and exclusivity.
The interior of the Elettrica is scheduled to be unveiled in January 2026, with the official launch of the production model anticipated in the spring of that year. As the automotive industry continues its transition toward electric mobility, Ferrari's entry into the sector with a technologically advanced, high-performance electric vehicle demonstrates its commitment to innovation and sustainability without compromising its legacy.
