EU Member States Agree to Extend Protection for Ukrainian Refugees Until 2027

Fri 13th Jun, 2025

In a significant development, EU member countries have reached a political agreement to extend temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees through March 2027. This extension allows affected individuals to continue residing in the EU without the need to undergo an asylum application process, ensuring their access to the labor market, social services, and healthcare.

The announcement was made during a meeting of EU interior ministers in Luxembourg, highlighting the ongoing commitment of the EU to support those fleeing the conflict in Ukraine. Although this political agreement marks an important step forward, the formal approval by member states is still pending and is expected to take place in an upcoming session.

Alongside this extension, discussions are underway regarding a coordinated return strategy for refugees. This strategy aims to facilitate their transition to other forms of residence, such as work or student visas, and to enhance the information available about return options, ultimately paving the way for a gradual return to Ukraine.

Magnus Brunner, the EU Commissioner, announced plans to appoint a special envoy for Ukrainian refugees. He indicated that should the situation in Ukraine improve, there is the possibility that the protection status could be revoked earlier than anticipated.

Since the onset of the Russian invasion, over 4.3 million people have fled Ukraine and sought refuge in the EU, with Germany hosting the largest number at over 1.2 million refugees. This ongoing humanitarian crisis has prompted a unified response from EU nations, reinforcing their solidarity with those affected by the war.
