The Eisbären Berlin are gearing up for the new season of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) with confidence as they aim to secure another championship title. The team, which has clinched the title four times in the last five years, is determined to continue its winning streak. During a recent press conference, the sports director emphasized the team's ambitious goals for the upcoming season.
In acknowledging the competitive landscape of the DEL, the sports director noted that many rival teams have made significant roster changes to enhance their chances against the reigning champions. Nevertheless, the Eisbären are prepared to face the heightened competition head-on, fully aware that they are the team to beat.
Head coach Serge Aubin expressed his belief that the recent successes will not lead to complacency among the players. He underscored the team's motivation, indicating that the thrill of victory drives them to strive for continued excellence.
In terms of roster changes, the Eisbären have opted for minimal adjustments following a strong previous season. Only a few key players, including Zach Boychuk, Gabriel Fontaine, and Olivier Galipeau, have departed from the team. Additionally, two young talents, Maxim Schäfer and Elias Schneider, will continue their development with North American junior teams. To bolster their lineup, the Eisbären have welcomed two experienced forwards, Andreas Eder and Markus Vikingstad, both familiar with the DEL.
Despite the team's overall satisfaction with their roster, there is concern regarding the injury of captain Kai Wissmann, who is expected to be sidelined for four to six months following an Achilles tendon injury sustained during training. The loss of such a pivotal player is a significant blow, as he is recognized as one of the top defenders in Europe.
The Eisbären will kick off their DEL season on September 9 with a sold-out home game against the newly promoted Dresdner Eislöwen. Before that, they will compete in the Champions Hockey League (CHL), facing Finnish team Lukko Rauma and French champions Brûleurs de Loups de Grenoble in a series of matches.
