In a closely contested first round of the presidential election in Ecuador, incumbent Daniel Noboa and leftist candidate Luisa González have emerged as the front-runners, setting the stage for a decisive runoff on April 13. The electoral landscape in Ecuador is currently marred by significant challenges, including a surge in violence and a constitutional crisis.
As of late last night, with approximately 91% of the votes counted, Noboa, representing the liberal-conservative faction, secured around 44.3% of the vote. González, who is affiliated with the political movement of former President Rafael Correa, closely followed with about 43.8%. This election saw a total of 16 candidates vying for the presidency, but only Noboa and González will compete in the upcoming runoff.
The new president will face formidable obstacles, as Ecuador grapples with escalating violence linked to powerful drug cartels. These criminal organizations have significantly increased their influence in the country, particularly through the trafficking of cocaine via Pacific ports destined for Europe and Asia. In response to this alarming situation, President Noboa declared a state of emergency and deployed military forces to combat the gangs.
Moreover, the country is currently experiencing a constitutional crisis. Noboa did not take a leave of absence from his presidential duties during the campaign, which contradicts constitutional provisions designed to prevent incumbents from misusing state resources for electoral advantages. Legal experts have argued that Noboa should have transferred authority to his vice president, Verónica Abad, prior to the elections, but reports indicate that the two have had significant disagreements.
Daniel Noboa, the son of a wealthy banana magnate, ascended to the presidency in October 2023 after his predecessor, Guillermo Lasso, dissolved the parliament and called for early elections. Since Noboa only completed Lasso's term, the nation is now preparing for new elections after a brief tenure of just over a year and a half.
As the nation look towards the April runoff, the stakes are high, with voters anxious about who will be able to restore stability and security in a country that was once regarded as relatively safe.
