An unsettling incident occurred on Thursday afternoon in Berlin-Wedding when a driver lost control of his vehicle and collided with a group of pedestrians. The accident took place on Seestraße, resulting in injuries to several children and an adult caregiver.
According to emergency services, the group consisted of 19 individuals, primarily children aged between seven and eight years, who were participating in a recreational activity. Initial reports indicate that six children sustained minor injuries, with three requiring transport to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. The adult caregiver, however, suffered more severe injuries and was also taken to a medical facility.
The driver, a 20-year-old man, was apprehended at the scene. Authorities suspect that he may have been under the influence of intoxicating substances at the time of the accident. He was transported to a hospital for a blood test before being taken to a detention facility. It has been confirmed that he holds a valid driving license.
Witness accounts suggest that the driver failed to stop at a red traffic light, while the pedestrians were legally crossing the street at the time of the incident. Police officials have characterized the driver's actions as reckless, although they do not believe that there was any intent to harm.
In response to the accident, a support team comprising emergency counselors, psychologists, and social workers was dispatched to assist the injured individuals and their families. The area surrounding the accident site at the intersection of Seestraße and Nordufer was cordoned off for the duration of the investigation.
Berlins police spokesperson emphasized that this incident does not appear to be an act of terrorism or a deliberate attack, but rather a tragic occurrence typical of urban traffic accidents.
