In 2012, Hong Kong billionaire Benny Wu purchased the island for five million dollars, with plans to develop it into a thriving vacation destination. Wu had an agreement with the Queensland government to maintain the island as a resort and intended to invest over ten million dollars for renovations. However, reports indicate that he failed to make any significant improvements.

Authorities became increasingly concerned as the island fell into disrepair, prompting them to issue a warning to Wu. They set a three-year deadline for him to revitalize tourism on Double Island, but this timeline expired without any action taken. As of June 2024, control of the island reverted to the government, which has since been on a quest to find a new tenant to restore its former glory.

Currently, the island is being marketed to potential lessees, with specific requirements outlined for interested parties. The new tenant will be obligated to renovate the property, dismantle any outdated infrastructure, and preserve the island's natural beauty. Furthermore, they must consider investments in new facilities and develop fresh tourism offerings to attract visitors once again.

Despite the idyllic setting and the allure of an island getaway, the search for a new steward for Double Island continues to yield no results. The real estate firm tasked with the leasing process has yet to find a suitable candidate willing to invest in the island's future.
