Germany’s Hidden Gender Inequality: Extra Responsibilities for Men

Disney is set to enhance its sports streaming portfolio in Europe by integrating the American sports network ESPN into its Disney+ platform. This strategic move will make a broad selection of US sporting content accessible to European and select Asian audiences through Disney+.
Currently, ESPN is already present as a branded section within the Disney+ app, offering a range of sports such as women's football and American college sports. Disney has announced plans to significantly expand these offerings in the near future, aiming to provide a more comprehensive sports experience for subscribers outside the United States.
As the largest sports network in the United States, ESPN is majority-owned by Disney and is renowned for its extensive coverage of major US sports leagues, including the NBA (National Basketball Association) and NHL (National Hockey League). In the United States, ESPN not only broadcasts live sporting events but also produces a wide variety of sports-related shows, documentaries, and news programming.
However, the complete portfolio of ESPN content is unlikely to be available internationally due to regional broadcasting rights. Disney will need to negotiate individual agreements for sports coverage in each territory. Despite these limitations, the company has already demonstrated a commitment to bringing American sports to European viewers; for example, the NCAA college basketball championships have recently been streamed on Disney+ in Germany, and other US college sports are also being made available in the region.
Disney has confirmed that the ESPN offering will vary by market, but it plans to introduce a robust mix of US sports leagues on Disney+ throughout the coming year. The company aims to make both NBA and NHL content accessible internationally from the 2026-2027 season onward, with live broadcasts scheduled even if they occur during unconventional hours in Europe due to time zone differences. In addition to traditional sports, the platform will continue to feature American college sports as part of its expanded line-up.
Subscribers will also gain access to ESPN's acclaimed documentary series, such as the '30 for 30' collection, along with up-to-date sports news programs. Disney+ has already gained experience in broadcasting sports to European audiences through its coverage of women's UEFA Champions League matches and, in certain markets, men's football events. Furthermore, Disney intends to incorporate e-sports into its growing selection of sports content, catering to the rising interest in competitive gaming across Europe and beyond.
This initiative reflects Disney's broader strategy to diversify its streaming content and increase its appeal to sports fans outside the United States. By leveraging ESPN's extensive sports programming and its own global reach, Disney+ is poised to become a significant player in the European sports streaming market.
